Getting Your Colours Done

Over on the blog Midlife Chic, Nikki Garnett talks about her recent experience of 'getting her colours done'.

My comments to anyone who has been through this experience is to please remember that the colours that have been recommended to you are guidelines not tramlines. You can personalise the colour palette that has been recommended by interpreting and adapting it to work for you. You should not feel you are being forced to fit into a box that doesn't quite fit. Also, it takes a while to truly understand how the whole colour thing works. Don't rush into trying to apply a set of rules - try on clothes in the colours recommended to you, see the effect the colours have and how you feel wearing them. You should not feel obliged to wear a colour just because it is in your set of swatches. Equally, if you don't like it don't wear it!

What suits us is a far more complex play that includes contrast with individual skin and hair colour characteristics, the shapes, fabrics and textures that compliment body shape and how clothing can be used to express ourselves. It is how you put the whole package together which becomes your individual style and is a journey not a destination.

Styling Thoughts

A week or so ago I received an email from M&S with a taster of their Autumn 2016 collection featuring this image of cropped trousers which are going to be a major trend once the cooler weather comes later in the year.

A number my facebook friends had obviously received the same email as they commented on the outfit, describing the trendy cropped trousers as clownish, boring, drab and ugly. This got me thinking about how difficult it is sometimes to visualise different ways of wearing the same garment. I thought it would be interesting to look at other ways of styling these trousers including some of the items featured in the next email from M&S about the more colourful items in their range.
Here are a couple of suggestions. Either outfit could be worn with black tights or coloured ones to compliment the coloured tops.

Either option could be worn to work if your environment is less formal, on a dress-down Friday or to an offsite event.

Go Girls!

The press is awash at the moment with commentary about the wardrobes of Theresa May and Hillary Clinton and the impact of what these two women are wearing to their careers.

The message that comes over again and again is how important image is and the role of the clothes they wear. If it  is so important to the PM of the UK and to the potential next leader of the free world, why might it not be relevant to any woman in any business who is serious about her career?

Your appearance needs to establish your right to be in the room, sitting at that same table as your colleagues and not only demonstrate that you are on your game but make them think you might be better at it than they are.

Yes it is tough. However, the message is very clear; if you want to be successful you must pay attention to your appearance. You need to take advice, put it in your arsenal and use it to your advantage.
